Review of TheqtQT Gold Coast
A private rooftop oasis close to Surfers Paradise
Tiny cabin holidays in serene rural settings had just started catching before covid and border closures blew their popularity sky high. Now the hot travel trend has made its urban debut via QT Gold Coast’s unique new accommodation offering qtQT – six luxuriously appointed two-person tiny cabins overlooking their very own private rooftop oasis, all just a short stroll from Surfers Paradise’s glorious beaches.
On a pre-opening test drive in late November, we found nothing had been sacrificed by switching the tiny cabin concept from country to city. Despite being in the middle of Surfers Paradise qtQT perfectly captured the tiny cabin retreat aesthetic, its second-floor rooftop setting as peaceful a pocket as any located beyond bright city lights. What’s more, we found our 2.15m wide x 7.3m long cabin whisper quiet, its tranquillity magnified by an outlook across the tops of palm trees and other tropical plants to the mountains beyond.
Views from the qtQT
The view can be seen from anywhere in the cabin but is best when taken in from a horizontal position in the oh so comfortable bed, placed on a raised platform that fills one end of the cabin beneath the window. The interior colour palette is a relaxing laid-back mix of ochre, browns and greys. Alongside the bed lies the service tablet and a basket of games – backgammon, tic tac toe – next to a plush cushion-covered sofa and sideboard with jars of tasty treats, a snazzy coffee maker and marvellously well-stocked bar fridge. There are plenty of nooks and cubby holes for luggage, while a selection of beautiful wines slung in leather straps on the wall doubles as art. The most divine local décor is dotted about – Harvest Clay ceramics from the Gold Coast, a Drift Candle from Currumbin, and to-die-for-cosy bedding from cult Burleigh brand I Love Linen which also supplies the robes. In the bathroom lies a Dyson hairdryer and luscious Noosa-made Saya Skin lotions that truly left my skin softer than usual. Outside each cabin is a small terrace with a table and hanging chair ideal for reading or snoozing.
Beyond the line of cabins sprawls the landscaped area, complete with pathways meandering through garden beds, manicured lawn used for sunrise yoga sessions, and a stylish entertainer’s firepit where on the afternoon we arrive we enjoy a decadent cheese platter and DIY gin cocktails as the sunset dapples the sky pink and gold.
Private chefs for your perfect vegan meal
At dusk our party of six moves across to a large glass table aside from the impressive outdoor kitchen. Here our private chefs produce a five-star feast from state-of-the-art ovens and an Argentinian smoker while staff ensure our glasses are constantly topped up with French champagne.
Not surprisingly, there is a distinct air of exclusivity to qtQT one that is felt immediately upon stepping through the automatic glass doors that open out onto the rooftop. With a maximum of 12 guests at any one time, qtQT visitors can expect to feel like VIPs as they settle into their private precinct and salubrious tiny cabins. Among the luxuries on hand is a dedicated Curator of Sunshine who is available around the clock to organise blissful activities from massages to a private poolside cabana or a hinterland tour.
We opted for a Japanese whisky tasting in the QT Gold Coast’s signature restaurant Yamagen. This comes highly recommended not least because Yamagen reportedly stocks the largest selection of fine Japanese whiskies in Queensland. We were blown away with the quality of not only the whisky but also the trays of sushi served alongside which were nothing short of exceptional.
Romantic getaway on the Gold Coast
qtQT is ideal for the full gamut of holiday types. The atmosphere and design is equally amenable to winding down on a solo getaway, for a romantic escape with your S/O, or celebrating a milestone event and snapping up all six cabins for friends and family. The QT Gold Coast’s main tower has also recently undergone a full refurbishment. Rooms in the main part of the hotel now pop with colour, offer upgraded technology and Dyson hairdryers as well as brightly hued cosy Missoni robes. Spoil yourself by extending your trip to experiencing both qtQT and the QT Gold Coast. You won’t regret it.
