Lima – An exploration of Peru’s capital city

Your Abercrombie & Kent Peru: Spirit of the Incas journey begins in Lima. The city is a fusion of ancient civilisation and modern metropolis. Its pre-Columbian temples and modern high-rises create a stark but somehow perfect blend of two worlds. Relax into your new setting at the luxurious oceanside Belmond Miraflores Park Hotel.

After a night of R&R, wake up to a morning yoga session followed by a food lover’s exploration of the markets led by a local chef. With your fresh market ingredients, learn to make traditional Peruvian dishes. With some new culinary skill under your belt and a full stomach, head out on an exploration of Peru’s capital city.

Being vegan in Peru is easier than you think. In fact, most Peruvians follow a plant based diet in their day-to-day lives. Plant-based foods can be found in abundance here thanks to the diverse micro-climates found across the country. Some of our favourite vegan and vegan-adapted dishes are: mushroom or mango Ceviche, Pachamanca (vegetables cooked in a clay pot) and picarones (sweet potato dessert).

Finish your day by learning about the proposed healing powers of ayahuasca. This is a medicinal and spiritual plant used by indigenous tribes throughout the Amazon basin.

Sacred Valley – Visit the llamas and alpacas of Awana Kancha

Leave Lima behind and journey into the mystical realm of Peru’s Sacred Valley. Fly from Lima to Cusco, the Incan capital of Peru. On the way to your next luxury stay at Hotel Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba, visit the llamas and alpacas of Awana Kancha. Explore the 100-acre surrounds of Hotel Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba, nestled between Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Head deep into the Andes for a kayaking experience like no other. Glide through the pristine lagoon waters of Huaypo, taking in the stunning mountain surrounds.

Get in touch with Mother Nature, or as the Peruvians know her, Pachamama (Mother Earth goddess). Give an offering to Pachamama with a local shaman in a traditional “payment to the earth” ceremony. This is one of Peru’s oldest and most sacred rituals. Enjoy a lagoon-side lunch followed by an interactive demonstration in ancient traditions and medicinal plants. With thanks given to Pachamama, it’s time for you to feel a little spiritual wellness with a replenishing spa treatment.

The A&K Philanthropy support sustainable conservation projects of benefit to the local community and environment. You can meet the underprivileged children at Niños del Arco Iris (Children of the Rainbow) at the Kuychi Centre, one of the A&K Philanthropy projects. Join the owners of a local organic farmstead on a tour of their fields, followed by a farm-to-table lunch.

Cusco – Visiting Machu Picchu is a spiritual experience

Machu Picchu was a place of significance for the ancient Incas. Visiting Machu Picchu is just as much a spiritual experience today as it was then. Learn all about this historic site from an expert in the field before boarding the PeruRail Sacred Valley train. Experience the wonders of Machu Picchu with a guided afternoon visit. Stay at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, lying adjacent to the citadel.

Walk through the crumbling ruins of Machu Picchu as the sun rises, casting its light on the ancient citadel. Truly one of the most remarkable experiences. Before boarding the train back to Cusco, hike to the peak of Huayna Picchu for a spectacular view you’re unlikely to ever forget.

The last two-nights of this epic journey will be at Belmond Palacio Nazarenas. On your final day, you can create your own bespoke itinerary. From private morning yoga to lectures on the divine coca plant and coca-leaf oracle readings, Cusco is yours to discover.
