Whiskey Without Rules (And With Popcorn). My Night with Real McCoy

By someone who is technically grown-up but still drinks like she’s got stories to tell

I’m what you’d call a whiskey traditionalist, you know, neat, a splash of water at most, and none of this nonsense about putting it in martinis or mixing it with cola (unless you’re nineteen and on your second heartbreak, in which case, go ahead, drink what you need to). So, when I heard about flavoured whiskeys, my inner purist arched an eyebrow so high it left the postcode.

But then came Real McCoy, and the eyebrow? It’s still up, but more in admiration now. Because these are not your weird uncle’s cinnamon fireballs or that sticky maple disaster someone once brought to book club (we’ve never forgiven her).

No, Real McCoy is the cool friend who turns up with party snacks in one hand and the exact right drink in the other. And before you ask, yes, they’ve created Butter Popcorn Whiskey and Salted Caramel Whiskey, and no, I’m not making that up. And yes again, they are absolutely divine.

First Sip. Butter Me Up, Baby

Let’s start with the Buttered Popcorn flavour, because it’s the one that had me most sceptical. I had flashbacks of cinema carpets, yellow-stained fingers, and that one time I spilt popcorn into a stranger’s handbag (sorry, 2008). But pour this over ice and give it a swirl, it’s buttery, yes, but not greasy; it’s toasty, oaky, and somehow manages to taste like a memory of your best-ever movie night, but adult and sexy and without the crying during the trailers.

It’s nostalgia in a glass, the good kind. Like when you remember the one time your hair looked perfect all day and your jeans actually fit. You can sip it straight and feel sophisticated and fun, which, let’s face it, is not always easy to pull off after 8pm.

Also, side note, my first surfboard was a McCoy, so there’s a deeply personal, borderline-spiritual connection here. I mean, if I can’t ride the waves anymore (well I could if I was fit enough to catch one, maybe), at least I can ride the caramel-slicked swell of a whiskey that understands both my salt and my sweet sides. Thanks, universe.

Second Sip. Salted Caramel Seduction

Now onto the Salted Caramel, which is, frankly, the Ryan Gosling of this whiskey duo. Smooth. Rich. With just enough salt to keep it interesting. You don’t want to rush this one, although you will, because it’s that good. It’s like your gran’s Werther’s Originals collided with a smoky night in Nashville and decided to go dancing.

This baby is gorgeous in a whiskey sour (or even just over ice, with a knowing look), and it’s honestly hard not to start referring to it in the third person. Like, “Shall we stay in tonight? Salted Caramel’s coming over.” It’s got that vibe.

And if you want to go full chaos gremlin, try it in an espresso martini. It turns what was once a respectable cocktail into something slightly cheeky and mildly dangerous.

I’m Obsessed and I’m Not Even Sorry

Here’s the thing. I wanted to hate it. I really did. I wanted to take a moral stand against “silly flavours” and mutter about tradition and dignity and proper whiskey rituals.

But you know what? Life is short, the world’s on fire, and sometimes what you really need is a popcorn-flavoured whiskey that makes you feel like a cross between a mixologist and a movie star.

Real McCoy Whiskey comes in 50 mL mini bottles too

Real McCoy doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is probably why it works so well. It’s fun. It’s clever. It knows its place (and that place is your Friday night glass).

It’s also worth noting that they come in those adorable 50mL mini bottles, perfect for when you want a little taste without committing to a full-blown relationship. Like a Tinder date, but with caramel, and less disappointment.

So, whether you’re mixing up a cocktail, pouring it over ice, or sneakily adding it to your afternoon coffee (no judgment, I’m a writer), Real McCoy is absolutely worth the hype.

And if someone had told me years ago that one day I’d be sipping buttered popcorn whiskey and loving it more than half the men I’ve dated, I’d have called them mad. But here we are.

Cheers to flavour, to flexibility, and to having a first surfboard that was clearly a good omen for future whiskey choices.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a Whiskey Mule to make and an imaginary Oscar speech to rehearse.
