A Historical Jaunt Through Kempinski’s Most Outrageously Gorgeous Hotels (Bring a Gown, or at Least Clean Socks)

Let’s talk about Kempinski Hotels, shall we? They’re Europe’s oldest luxury hotel group, which sounds terribly grand and possibly a bit dusty, but actually they’re like the cool aunt who inherited a castle, trained in Paris, and now throws legendary parties while quoting T.S. Eliot. The Kempinski collection is dripping in history, personality, and posh linens, somehow managing to combine centuries-old palaces, bold interior design, and spas you’d sell your house to visit. And they do it all without breaking into a royal fanfare every five minutes. Tasteful, that’s the word. Very tasteful.

Dresden’s Baroque Glow-Up: Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski

Built in 1705 by Augustus II for his mistress, bombed into oblivion in WWII, then revived like a phoenix with parquet floors, a conjoined King and Queen suite, and carpets so plush they probably come with altitude warnings. Recently refurbished with art, fashion and Saxon drama by Markus Hilzinger, it’s part palace, part dream flat for very wealthy ghosts.

Berlin’s Crown Jewel: Hotel Adlon Kempinski

If this place had a diary, it would read like a historical romance novel. Greta Garbo stayed. Einstein wandered the halls. Charlie Chaplin probably did a little dance in the lobby. Right beside Brandenburg Gate, it’s all glamour and gilt, with Michelin-starred nosh, mixologists who moonlight as magicians, and a Royal Suite that looks like a Bond villain’s retirement plan.

Alpine Chic with a Side of Bubbly: Kempinski Palace Engelberg

The Swiss knew what they were doing in the 1880s when they started heading here for fresh air and mineral water. Originally the Grand Hotel Winterhaus, now a reimagined fairytale complete with Belle Époque architecture, vintage balconies, and spas that could put your therapist out of work. Charm rating: dangerously high.

Mountain Drama Done Right: Grand Hotel des Bains St. Moritz

This place is built on a spring. A literal healing spring praised by medieval doctors and modern wellness warriors alike. The building’s been everything from neo-Baroque fantasy to modern escape pod, now reborn as a haven of alpine sophistication complete with Greek food, a 2,800 square metre spa, and a restaurant called “Billionaire” that does exactly what it says on the tin.

Istanbul’s Crown Jewel: Çırağan Palace Kempinski

Formerly an Ottoman palace, now a jewel box of mother-of-pearl, inlaid ebony, velvet drapes and hammam bathrooms that make your ensuite look like a broom closet. Recently refurbished and more decadent than ever. One does not simply “dine” here you embark on a culinary adventure with ceilings higher than your expectations and traditional Turkish dishes that would make a sultan weep.

Lakeside Glamour in the Tatras: Grand Hotel Kempinski High Tatras

Set by a glacial lake so picturesque it could’ve been Photoshopped by angels, this Slovakian retreat is part spa, part storybook, and all kinds of wonderful. Whether you’re sipping cocktails by the fire or paddling out under the Carpathian stars, it’s as if Narnia got a five-star Tripadvisor rating.

Royal Bavarian Maximalism: Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Munich

Originally opened by a king who demanded the noblest hotel in the land because modesty is overrated. It’s right in the heart of Munich’s poshest precinct, with rooms inspired by staterooms, royal drama, and designers who clearly believe less is never more. If you’re not staying in the Ludwig Suite, are you even trying?

Sea Breezes and Sparkle: Kempinski Palace Portorož, Istria

A belle of the Adriatic ball since 1910, this beachside beauty combines Habsburg drama with modern smugness. Think Michelin stars, salt air, and chandeliers that have seen things. The Crystal Hall looks like it was designed for tsarist weddings or pop videos. Possibly both. Either way, bring sunglasses.

Latvian Legend: Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga

If buildings could talk, this one would have stories that would shock your nana. It’s had Nobel laureates, Soviet cocktail bars, secret listening rooms, and now Michelin-recommended fusion food. Stylishly restored and smack next to the National Opera, it’s Riga’s answer to “What if James Bond liked dessert?”

An Actual Palace, Please and Thank You: Kempinski Royal Residence Nymphenburg

This one isn’t like a palace, it is a palace. Well, technically a royal residence within palace grounds, complete with Damien Hirst artworks, a wine cellar, and a dining room that practically insists on bejewelled napkin rings. It sleeps your entire aristocratic entourage and is ideal for either a discreet family gathering or a full-scale Bridgerton episode.

Bottom line?

Kempinski hotels are not your average “nice room with a breakfast buffet” situation. They’re time machines with spa menus. Whether you’re in the mood for emperors, Ottoman intrigue, alpine grandeur or just a really good nap with Versailles floors beneath your slippers, they’ve got you covered.

Bring a good book, a dramatic coat, and a willingness to say things like, “I’ll have the tasting menu, thank you.”
