Australian Lincoln Hilton will be competing in the Duncan Memorial Piping competition on Sunday, August 15. Yet rather than spend 24 hours or so in an airline seat, first class, of course, you can watch his prowess with the bagpipes in your home bath filled with bubbles and a whisky in hand.
You can even learn how to play the bagpipes online Now in its 18th year and taking place from 7th – 15th August 2021, Piping Live! will be a celebration of piping, packed full of world-class performances, music sessions, recitals, competitions, book launches, and workshops.
Estonian piping and Irish pipes in Glasgow
Bagpipers aren’t just for the Scots among us. There are also Estonian pipes and Irish pipes. The piping festival has also showcased Zampgna from Italy, Duda from the Czech Republic as well as bagpipes from Greece, Slovakia, and Sweden.
The Scots tell me that pipe music has been around for 40,000 years. Pipes are our earliest human instrument for which we have evidence.

The Glasgow National Piping Centre
If you’re desperate for a bit of live travel porn, travel to Glasgow online and check out the National Piping Centre building which plays host to Piping Live! is an Italianate church, originally built as the Cowcaddens Free Church.
As most of us will be locked down for who knows how long, there’s plenty of time to learn something new. So why not the bagpipes?
