Luxury hotels in Bali: The Ritz-Carlton in Nusa Dua

The Ritz-Carlton in Bali is your perfect destination

The first thing to know about The Ritz-Carlton Bali is that it is not Mandapa. Let us clear that up before anyone starts packing linen trousers for Ubud and preparing to commune with a rice field. This is the Ritz-Carlton in Nusa Dua, perched in that gloriously polished corner of Bali where the ocean sparkles like it has been briefed by management, and even the golf carts seem to glide about with a quiet sense of purpose.

And the arrival. You walk into the lobby and the view hits you with such theatrical confidence that you almost expect a wind machine, and a small but emotionally committed dove release. The whole resort drops away beneath you in layers of green, stone, palms and blue water, with the Indian Ocean shimmering in the distance like it has just had a very expensive facial. It is the sort of entrance that makes you stand still for a moment, partly from awe and partly because your brain has briefly left your body and gone to look for better adjectives.
The resort itself is vast and beautifully arranged, with paths winding through tropical gardens, pools glinting everywhere, and little tented cabanas around the pool and beach that make lounging feel like a profession.

The pools at The Ritz-Carlton in Bali
The pools are magnificent. There are resort pools for proper languishing, family splashing, glamorous posing, and the sort of horizontal drifting that makes you wonder why you ever wasted your life sitting upright. But the real triumph, for me, was the in-room pool in the pavilion suite. This was the sort of thing estate agents describe as “bijou” when they mean “footbath.” This was big enough to feel indulgent and private enough to make you feel faintly royal.

The pavilion suite itself had that calm Ritz-Carlton confidence. Elegant, stylishly Balinese, and full of lovely textures and space. It offers you an outdoor area, a private pool, and enough room to reconsider your entire domestic situation back home.
Food at The Ritz-Carlton in Bali
Food, however, is where The Ritz-Carlton Bali moves from very beautiful to unreasonable.
Bejana, Indonesian cuisine in Bali

At Bejana, the Indonesian restaurant, dinner becomes part theatre. When you arrive water is poured over your hands at the table, which is meant to be a graceful gesture but did make me feel like a minor deity. Then came the sambal, made in front of you, fresh and fiery and aromatic, with the sort of confidence that says, “Yes, this will wake up every ancestor you have ever had.”

The skewers and Indonesian tapas were fabulous. The Indonesian small plates had that wonderful quality of making you want to try everything while also wanting to protect your favourites from other people’s forks. There were three different kinds of rice. Why have one rice when you could have a small diplomatic summit of rices?. I did not ask too many questions. I simply ate with gratitude.
Breakfast at Senses

Breakfast at Senses is a culinary nation-state. There is sushi made fresh in front of you. There are noodles. There is a fruit station where juice is prepared. There is cereal, cheese, Indonesian food, Japanese food, pastries, eggs.
The spa and the hydro pool

Then there is the spa, which deserves a paragraph of reverent nonsense all to itself. The hydro pool is incredible. Truly. It bubbles, blasts, pummels and soothes with such skill. The Balinese massage was excellent, combining proper therapeutic pressure with that lovely sense of ritual that Bali does so well. It was calming, firm without being punitive, and blissful without tipping into the sort of spa language where someone tells you your spleen is carrying ancestral disappointment.
The Missoni Beach Club

And just when you think the resort cannot possibly add another layer, along comes the Missoni beach club, bringing colour, pattern and Italian seaside glamour to the beachfront. It is relaxed enough that you can enjoy it without needing to pretend you understand resort fashion. There is something very pleasing about lounging beside the Indian Ocean under the influence of Missoni stripes. It is as if Milan and Bali had a very well-accessorised baby and handed it a spritz.
What makes The Ritz-Carlton Bali so special is that couples can drift about looking moonlit. Families can settle in without panic. Solo guests can pretend they are in a novel. Everyone is quietly absorbed into the great, beautiful machinery of the place.

It is polished but beneath the polish is warmth, ceremony, humour, generosity and that deeply Balinese ability to make beauty feel both extravagant and grounding.
The Ritz-Carlton Bali in Nusa Dua is a lush, ocean-facing, breakfast-conquering, sambal-making, pool-glittering resort of tremendous charm. You arrive for the view. You stay for the food, the spa, the pools, the service and the small possibility that, after having your hands washed at the table, you may indeed be descended from royalty.
