My trip to South Africa was a serious bucket-list adventure—a whirlwind of fascinating contrasts.
Luxury and wilderness, history and adventure—all wrapped up in an unforgettable journey from Johannesburg to Durban, Cape Town, and some incredible game reserves in between.
Durban: The Perfect Beginning
With its dramatic Indian Ocean coastline, this exquisite city instantly captivated me. It feels both European and uniquely African, blending old-world charm with modern energy. But the highlight of my time there wasn’t just the beauty—it was exploring it in a way I’d never imagined.
The Oyster Box
Our first stop was The Oyster Box, a renowned five-star luxury hotel in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal. Perched majestically on Umhlanga’s beachfront, it offers breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and the iconic Umhlanga Lighthouse.
The hotel features individually decorated rooms and suites, designed to provide both comfort and elegance. Guests can choose from classic rooms, sea-facing luxury suites, or the opulent Presidential Suite.

After extensive renovations, it reopened in 2009, preserving its historic charm.
Conveniently, The Oyster Box is just a 15-minute drive from King Shaka International Airport, making it an ideal luxury retreat with easy access to Durban’s vibrant city life.
Into the Wild: The Magic of a Safari
Between the buzz of city life, we swapped urban chaos for the raw beauty of the African bush. But a safari is unlike any other travel experience—it’s not just about seeing magnificent animals. It’s about stepping into a world where nature reigns and where we are mere visitors in their domain.
Each of the game reserves we visited offered something unique. Some were sprawling, evoking a sense of endless wilderness, while others were more intimate, allowing for incredibly close encounters with the wildlife.
We tracked leopards at dawn, watched elephants and rhinos bathing at sunset, and felt our hearts race when lions prowled close to our (very safe) open vehicle.
The beauty of a private game reserve is its exclusivity—no crowds, no rushing, just nature in its purest form. The guides, with their encyclopaedic knowledge and instinctive understanding of the animals, turned each game drive into an immersive adventure.
They also constantly reminded us: we are the visitors, and the wildlife is the host—we must treat them with respect, not the other way around.
There’s a certain luxury to a safari—not in an indulgent, five-star way (though there’s plenty of that, too), but in how it strips back the noise of daily life. It’s a feeling that’s hard to explain until you experience it.
✨ Sundowners in the bush—Akubra on head, boots on feet—are an essential part of the safari experience. A gin & tonic in hand as the sky explodes into shades of pink and orange, descending into night, is pure magic.
✨ Dinners under the stars, where the wild replaces the usual city soundtrack, make for unforgettable moments.
✨ And the privilege of waking up to an African sunrise, with nothing but the savannah stretching before you, is a golden, soul-stirring experience.
Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat
This five-star luxury lodge is set within a 7,500-hectare private reserve in South Africa’s Cederberg Mountains. Also part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, it offers a seamless blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and refined hospitality.
Bushmans Kloof features 14 rooms, two suites, and two private villas, each surrounded by lush indigenous gardens. The amenities are brilliantly modern, yet the tranquility of the wilderness remains untouched.
🍽 Dining – Inspired by local traditions and organic produce from the lodge’s own gardens. Guests can enjoy fine dining at the historic Homestead or flame-grilled meals under the stars.
🚶♀️ Activities – The reserve is home to over 130 ancient rock art sites, some dating back 10,000 years, offering a rare glimpse into San culture. Outdoor lovers can hike, canoe, cycle, or go on wildlife drives—or simply indulge in the sensational spa.
The respect for the land here is palpable—apart from poachers, that is (who are the worst kind of human).
The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa: Cape Town
A five-star boutique hotel near Cape Town, The Twelve Apostles sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Twelve Apostles mountain range, offering guests breathtaking sea and mountain views.
The hotel boasts 70 uniquely designed rooms and suites, with options for ocean-facing or mountain-facing views.
Dining here is extraordinary:
🍽 Azure Restaurant – Known for its fine seafood and South African specialties.
🍹 The Leopard Bar – A favourite for sundowners, with an epic ocean backdrop.
One morning, we set off in vintage motorcycles with sidecars (yes, actual sidecars!), weaving through the city like characters from a 1920s adventure novel. The sea breeze, the sense of freedom, the thrill of zooming through Cape Town’s streets—it was one of my all-time favourite travel experiences.
Later, at The Leopard Bar, we listened to Christo Brand, Nelson Mandela’s former prison guard, as he shared deeply personal stories of their unique friendship—an evening that was as powerful as it was moving.
The Madikwe Game Reserve
Spanning 750 square kilometres near the Botswana border, Madikwe offers a malaria-free safari experience, making it ideal for families. It’s home to over 60 mammal species, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo) and the endangered African wild dog.
Notably, Operation Phoenix, one of the largest wildlife relocation projects in Africa, reintroduced entire breeding herds, dramatically revitalising the reserve.
Madikwe does not allow day-trippers, ensuring an uncrowded, exclusive safari experience.
