High tea at the David Jones Jacquart Bar

There’s a certain allure to David Jones that makes you dream of being locked inside, left to revel in the crème de la crème of retail bliss all by yourself. It’s a palace fit for royalty, a place where you could both live and dine in opulent comfort. This was my exact sentiment when I discovered the new Jacquart bar nestled on level two.

Hidden away in a discreet corner, the bar offers views out to Hyde Park, lending it a slightly New York-esque vibe. The round marble tables, black Parisian-style chairs, and wooden floorboards imbue the space with a chic French flair. And then, there’s the pièce de résistance—a towering display of Jacquart champagne.

You see, I’m a champagne girl through and through. Always have been, always will be. And it turns out, I’m not alone. Australians rank as the sixth largest consumers of champagne in the world. Yet, I had never tasted Jacquart before this visit, and let me tell you, it was a delightful surprise. There’s nothing like a touch of decadence to kick off a Saturday morning, and for me, that meant forgoing the traditional English Breakfast tea in favour of a glass of bubbly.

As I savoured my champagne, I noticed we weren’t the only ones indulging. Nearby, two stylish women were also enjoying a sip, likely preparing to dive into the penultimate day of the EOFY sales. There’s something wonderfully indulgent about starting your day with champagne in such refined surroundings.

Following the champagne, we were presented with a grand petit fours stand to share. This culinary masterpiece was expertly curated by Head Chef Alessandro Morabito, formerly of Pepi’s and Bel & Brio. The menu was nothing short of spectacular. It featured poached slipper lobster meat on a saffron brioche bun, homemade blini with herb crème fraîche and Yarra Valley salmon roe caviar, and house-baked petite scones served with clotted cream and strawberry preserve.

The Victoria Vanilla Sponge Cake is a must taste

Each bite was a delight, but the standout for me was the Victoria vanilla sponge cake. Light, airy, and perfectly balanced, it was a testament to the skill and creativity of Chef Morabito. The entire experience felt like a journey through the finest flavours and textures, each bite more exquisite than the last.

But it’s not just about the food and drink. The Jacquart bar is an experience, a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to fully appreciate the elegance and sophistication that surrounds you. It’s a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city, a place where you can relax, unwind, and lose yourself in the moment.

The bar’s ambience is perfectly matched by its attentive staff, who ensure that every detail is taken care of. From the moment you sit down to the last sip of champagne, you are treated like royalty. It’s this combination of impeccable service, stunning surroundings, and outstanding food and drink that makes the Jacquart bar a must-visit.
