Everyone Loves a Flight Sale (Especially When It Involves Palm Trees and Escaping Your Inbox)

There’s something about a flight sale that makes even the most cynical among us start Googling “how long can you leave a cactus alone?” and “is passive income real?” Because Jetstar, in its infinite wisdom and occasional bouts of generosity, has just announced direct flights from Brisbane to Rarotonga, and my suitcase has flung itself open of its own accord.

Starting May 2026, these glorious little winged miracles will be zipping off three times a week to Rarotonga, the Cook Islands’ glowy, glorious, postcard-perfect capital island where the water is turquoise, the locals say Kia Orana with actual warmth, and the only traffic jam is caused by a chicken crossing the road at its own dignified pace.

Even better? You can escape Brisbane’s endless parade of activewear and overpriced smoothies for as little as $249 one-way. That’s cheaper than a night out in the Valley and comes with far less chance of regret (unless you forget sunscreen, in which case, best of luck, lobster).

This new Brisbane route follows Jetstar’s already-successful Sydney to Rarotonga flights, which kicked off in 2023 and promptly caused half of Bondi to wander off looking for hammocks and Wi-Fi-free bliss. With this expansion, Jetstar becomes the only airline offering direct flights from both Sydney and Brisbane which means more Aussies have a valid excuse to wear linen unironically and pretend they’ve always been into snorkelling.

Jetstar’s Group CEO Stephanie Tully is positively glowing (possibly with sunblock) as she declares that by next year, Jetstar will offer over 110,000 seats to and from the Cook Islands annually. That’s a lot of tan lines and travel selfies.

Meanwhile, Cook Islands General Manager Graeme West is already fluffing the beach towels. “Australians are realising that the Cook Islands are different,” he says. “There are no crowds. You can circumnavigate the whole island in under an hour and still have time for cocktails.” (Okay, he didn’t say that last bit. But spiritually, he did.)

So, what’s the big deal about Rarotonga?

Well, apart from the fact that it looks like the background of every Windows screensaver, Rarotonga is a lush, tropical dream. Think jungle-draped mountains, velvet beaches, and lagoons so clear you’ll want to drink them (but please don’t). Snorkelling, paddleboarding, and low-key existential joy are all included.

And if you really want to up the fantasy, take a 50-minute flight to Aitutaki, a place so beautiful it makes honeymooners weep and influencers use adjectives like “sublime” and “ethereal” without irony. Its lagoon has been described as “the most stunning in the world,” which is not something said lightly by people who’ve been to Santorini and Noosa.

Flight schedule from Brisbane begins 18 May 2026

Depart Brisbane at 22:20 and wake up in Rarotonga at 08:30 the next day, fully transformed into someone who owns shell jewellery and has opinions on sarongs. Return flights leave Raro at 10:00 and get you back in Brisbane at 12:10, hopefully still smelling faintly of coconut oil and confidence.

So if you’re the sort of person who enjoys sun, sand, and smugly announcing “I just needed a break, you know?” this one’s for you. But move fast, the $249 sale fares are only live for 48 hours, or until we collectively crash the Jetstar website in a frenzy of wanderlust and strategic sick leave planning.

Pack your SPF and leave your dignity at the departure gate.
Rarotonga awaits.
