Luxury hotel review on Thailand’s Wilder Island

Boutique Refinement on Thailand’s Wilder Island
By Roderick Eime

Thailand’s second-largest island is still one of the country’s most appealing secrets. While Phuket and Koh Samui command much of the international spotlight, Koh Chang, in the far southeastern province of Trat, presents a more relaxed proposition: quiet beaches beneath rainforest-clad mountains, with large parts of the island protected by Mu Ko Chang National Park.
How to get to Ko Chang in Thailand
There is no grotesque bridge of concrete and steel pouring traffic onto the island. Instead, a busy flotilla of ferries carries our car across the channel from Ao Thammachat pier, completing the journey to Koh Chang’s northern shore in about 30 minutes.
Another agreeable half-hour takes us roughly 90 degrees anticlockwise to the island’s ocean-facing west coast. The roadside scenery is not dominated by enormous resorts, but by palm fronds and an advancing jungle canopy sheltering small cafés, colourful shops and low-rise pensions.

It is here that The Retreat Koh Chang offers an elegant base from which to explore this distinctive destination. Independently owned and operated by the Teeraniti family, led by siblings Mook and Mate Teeraniti, the design-focused, 38-key property belongs to Small Luxury Hotels of the World and appears in the prestigious Condé Nast Johansens directory.
The Retreat is a divine boutique resort in Koh Chang

A genuinely boutique resort, The Retreat combines contemporary tropical architecture, personalised service and a strong affinity with Koh Chang’s natural setting. Working from what was effectively a greenfield site, Bangkok design studio SpaceLAB developed the property around the idea of “slow luxury”, supported by layers of historical and ecological storytelling.
The architectural intent is apparent from the moment we arrive. Landscaped gardens and carefully maintained waterways surround low-rise buildings designed to sit comfortably within the terrain. Reclaimed teak, natural stone and open-air spaces establish a mood of quiet sophistication without losing an unmistakably Thai identity. Mature palms and dense tropical vegetation remain integral to the experience rather than being cleared away to accommodate it.

“Our vision for The Retreat Koh Chang was to create a place where guests can truly slow down and reconnect with nature, with themselves, and with the essence of Thai hospitality,” says Mate Teeraniti. “We’re not trying to be the biggest, but rather the most meaningful experience on the island.”
Accommodation extends from stylish guestrooms to popular pool-access suites and larger villas. Interiors are restrained but luxurious, making liberal use of natural materials, generous living areas and an easy indoor-outdoor flow suited to the tropical climate.

Service at the Retreat
Service is warm, attentive and refreshingly unobtrusive. There is little of the ceremony sometimes encountered at larger luxury resorts. Instead, staff cultivate a welcoming atmosphere that feels both genuine and personal. A glance through the leading review sites shows that guests frequently praise the peaceful surroundings, excellent breakfast and sense of privacy created by the resort’s intimate scale.

Dining follows a similar philosophy, with an emphasis on fresh produce and local flavours. Seafood sourced from nearby fishing communities features prominently, while the waterfront location creates an atmospheric setting for dinner and sunset drinks. As the sinking sun turns the wispy clouds pastel pink, I begin to feel as though I should be proposing to someone.
Activities in Koh Chang
Koh Chang also provides plenty of reasons to venture beyond the resort. Our short island-hopping excursion reveals secluded beaches and coral reefs, while kayaks and paddleboards offer a slower means of exploring the coastline. Inland, rainforest trails lead towards waterfalls, elevated lookouts and one of Thailand’s richest botanical environments, where more than 1,000 plant species have been recorded.

Nature enthusiasts can explore mangrove ecosystems, tropical forests and abundant birdlife in landscapes first documented by Danish botanist Johannes Schmidt during pioneering surveys conducted more than a century ago. The island’s exceptional biodiversity is increasingly becoming an attraction in its own right, and The Retreat has enthusiastically incorporated this natural heritage into its broader philosophy.
Back at the property, guests can make use of the swimming pools, book wellness treatments, join cooking experiences or take part in curated local excursions intended to build a deeper appreciation of the destination.

For travellers looking beyond Thailand’s busier resort islands, The Retreat Koh Chang successfully brings together boutique luxury, environmental sensitivity and heartfelt hospitality. It is more than an attractive place to stay; it is an invitation to experience one of the country’s most naturally beautiful and comparatively undeveloped island destinations.
