There’s something magical about a swift but serene Fijian island getaway. And when the invitation promises an intimate, exclusive experience with only a handful of villas, where guests enjoy privacy, personalized service, and exquisite food—count me in!
‘Luxe’ and ‘Fiji’ have become synonymous with island resorts like Kokomo, Tokoriki, Six Senses, Yasawa, Castaway, Lomani, and Paradise Cove. Now, Royal Davui Island Resort joins the ranks, drawing Australian vacationers seeking first-class style just a few hours from the mainland.
With just over 72 hours on Davui (pronounced Da-voo-ee), our small group of four travel writers made the most of it. On ‘famil’ trips like this, we squeeze in as much as possible—snorkelling, cooking, nature walks, treks, fishing trips, water sports, and, of course, enjoying the food—so we can share what’s available when it’s your turn to travel. If you’re planning a longer stay, you’d likely space out the activities, but honestly, if I were on a ‘real’ holiday, I’d happily do next to nothing, savouring the luxury of the island life.
Fiji Airways from Sydney to Nadi
We began early on a Friday morning, catching the 6 a.m. Fiji Airways flight from Sydney. Landing in Nadi, we were greeted with a traditional Fijian welcome at the airport—ukuleles strumming, instantly shifting us into Fiji mode. After a short wait, we boarded a private plane to the Pacific Harbour aerodrome, where a fast launch whisked us across to Royal Davui. For those wanting to make an entrance, a rockstar chopper ride is also an option. The entire resort has just undergone a renovation, elevating it from sensational to sublime.
The warm welcome from the resort team—including owner and fifth-generation Fijian Chris Southwick and his partner Grant Seylhouwer—proved once again that Fijians are among the most calming and gentle people in the world. The resort, with its 16 luxurious villas, is perched in the Beqa Lagoon, known for its exclusivity, pristine environment, and natural beauty. It’s the epitome of seclusion.
The Villas at the Royal Davui
My villa, number 12, offered stunning water views, and the isolation of each villa ensured complete privacy. Each has a private plunge pool, deck, and a spacious living area, with my villa boasting a separate bedroom and a bathroom with double-sized amenities. The decor is understated, relaxed, and tastefully elegant—a testament to the innate style of owners Chris and Grant.

The resort’s main signature pool has been revamped with new lounges and cabanas, and the grounds are dotted with new sculptures, vibrant foliage, and overgrown pots that add to the resort’s charm.
Fiji dining
Dining at Davui is a highlight, featuring fresh local produce, seafood, and a fusion of international and Fijian cuisine. The resort offers all-inclusive dining with a daily changing menu, ensuring no guest experiences the same meal twice, even if staying for a week. For breakfast, you order lunch; at lunch, you order dinner. Every dish is designed to complement the tropical Fijian climate, with the seafood and salad options being particularly outstanding. Breakfast is sensational, featuring a banana bread unlike any I’ve ever tasted.
Cultural and Adventure Activities on the Fiji Islands
Royal Davui offers guests a taste of local culture with traditional Fijian firewalking ceremonies, unique to the nearby Beqa Island. Other adventures include a Sand Cay Beach picnic, a kava ceremony, crab racing, and a Kokoda cooking class where I learned to make a superb Spanish Mackerel ceviche. World-class snorkelling and diving, champagne sunset cruises, and jet ski safaris are also on the agenda, making it a perfect Fijian resort stay.
Eco-Tourism and Sustainability in Fiji
Royal Davui is committed to preserving its natural environment, using solar energy, maintaining sustainable water practices, and protecting the marine ecosystem.
Overall, Davui Island offers a luxurious, secluded retreat perfect for those seeking peace and exquisite flavours. I’d recommend taking a partner or friend, and while surrounded by the splendour of the South Pacific, you’ll undoubtedly feel a resounding ‘Bula!’ in your heart.
